In 2013, Betsy Ayala of Houston, Texas was nearing her 30th birthday when she gave birth to her daughter, Isabella. This should have been the happiest time in her life. Instead she discovered (via some Facebook messages) that her then-husband was having an affair with a co-worker. Rather than give into the hurt and humiliation, Betsy took charge of her health and dropped 103 pounds in the process.
Betsy had always struggled with weight. She went on her first diet at age 13. Because of anxiety and being a target of bullies, Betsy used food for comfort. This was a habit that she continued through college where her weight rose to 210 pounds. She topped out at 262 pounds when Isabella was born.
Tough days were ahead for the new mom. Betsy battled with postpartum depression, anxiety, insomnia, and fatigue. In September 2013, she made an effort to turn things around by incorporating Herbalife shakes into her diet. Betsy dropped 60 pounds in just 4 months. She was making great progress, but it was just 2 days after Christmas when she discovered her husband's affair. Isabella was 6 months old, Betsy was still over 200 pounds, and her marriage was falling apart.
They say that the best revenge is living well. Betsy started taking dance and Zumba classes with her sister 3 days a week. She graduated to a 6-day per week training regimen which involved running and lifting weights. She also cleaned up her diet and increased her protein intake.
This entire experience has been life-changing for Betsy. What she has come to understand is that her ex-husband's infidelity and disparaging remarks (referring to her as a "cow" and a "fat f**k") were a wake-up call. She sees it all as a blessing: "I prayed all the time for my life to change and my prayers were answered just maybe not in the way I envisioned but I got a second shot at a fresh start and I'm grateful for that. It's changed everything in my life."
Betsy now has a completely different outlook on life. At a svelte 159 pounds, she no longer has a critical view of herself. Betsy says, "I'm happier, I'm confident and most of all I'm positive." She can now set a good example for her daughter which is really important to her.
Every weight loss journey is about personal growth, self-awareness, and accountability. Betsy has found peace with herself and with her ex saying, "My ex-husband and I are actually good now. It took me a while to get to that place of forgiveness but what he did was about him and not me. My journey has really helped me understand that."
What a powerful lesson for us all. Well done, Betsy. Well done.
